If you folks plan on patching the portal server always use JSPM and avoid the SDM ....(personal experience says its not worth going the SDM route)

Good post! Thats one of the common "bad practices" used these days for updating your Java system. For general updates, new Business Functions, etc.. it is always recommended to use JSPM.
In other cases such as developing your own java app (ex. a connector for PI or EP), must be deployed through SDM.
In the worst of the cases, when an update through JSPM does not go well, you can still use SDM to undeploy what went wrong.
